Farmer’s Market at Marble Springs

Join us for our Farmer’s Market every Thursday, May 18 to September 21! There are always a great variety of produce and crafts – come check it out!  All vendors will be selling fresh, locally-produced products including sauces, seasonal produce, herbs, perennial plants and more (weekly selection will vary).

Marble Springs: Annual Meeting

Marble Springs State Historic Site will host the Annual Meeting of the Governor John Sevier Memorial Association with a special presentation by Joe Swann, on Saturday, June 24th, 2017 from 12:00pm until 2:00pm.

The Annual Meeting will take place at 12:00pm and a light lunch will be provided for registered guests. The meeting will feature a lecture at 1:00pm by Swann titled, “The Life and Times of David Crockett in East Tennessee.” Registration is not required for the lecture.

Statehood Day at Marble Springs

June 1, 2017 marks the 221st anniversary of Tennessee’s admission as the 16th state in the year 1796. In conjunction with the Historic Homes of Knoxville, Marble Springs State Historic Site will commemorate this occasion with a weekend of Living History.

Saturday, May 27 from 10am-5pm walk amongst Living History interpreters in 18th Century clothing portraying life on the frontier. Militia drills along with demonstrations of 18thCentury life. The celebration will continue into Sunday, May 28 from 11-4pm with Living History encampments and various interpreters. Children’s activities include falling into a militia drill with the reenactors. Militia camps will be open between activities. Blacksmithing, weaving, and open hearth cooking will be demonstrated all weekend. A full schedule of events will be available at www.marblesprings.net. Details are subject to change.

This event is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated.

Storytelling Festival

Join us at Marble Springs on Saturday, May 6th for the Marble Springs Storytelling Festival from 10:00 am till 5:00 pm. Professional storytellers Susan Fulbright, Sheri Liles, Cuz Headrick, and Millie Sieber from the Smoky Mountain Storytellers Association will be performing on our historic grounds telling traditional and historic stories. This year will include traditional folk musician and Appalachian historian, Chip Bailey, whose program titled, “With a Banjo on my Knee: The music of the American Plantation 1760-1860” which will emphasize the contributions of the African Slaves, the Scots-Irish immigrants, and Stephen Foster, the “Father of American Music.” Festivities begin at 10:30am with the Knoxville Area Dulcimer Club followed by the storytelling at 11:00. Children’s activities will also be available; the historic buildings will be open for self guided tours. Pack your picnic, spread out your blanket, or set up your lawn chairs and enjoy some great East Tennessee traditions.

Programming assistance for Marble Springs is provided by Knox County. Marble Springs is funded under an agreement with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Tennessee Historical Commission, and supplemented by additional funds raised by the Governor John Sevier Memorial Association.

Tree Planting Celebration

In recognition of Arbor Day, Marble Springs will host a Tree Planting Celebration on April 8th starting at 10:00 am. Participants will first learn how to properly plant and label saplings to meet arboretum qualifications as set by the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council. Afterwards, participants can help plant the 60th tree in recognition of Marble Springs reaching a level 2 Arboretum. Lunch will be provided for those helping plant our celebratory tree and take place at about noon.

Guest speaker, Tom Simpson, the Region Urban Forester with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, will provide a lecture on The Importance of Urban Foresty at about 1:00 pm. The Marble Springs Arboretum will be open for self-guided tours throughout the event with a guided tour scheduled at about 2 pm. Children can also participate in Earth Day themed crafts throughout the event.
